Passing the Trash

The name is familiar. Kay Letourneau. The school teacher convicted for having sex with a sixth-grade pupil was released from prison.

The sordid story was a brief flash. It was not, however, an isolated incident. In 2002 I spent a month on the topic. Misconduct, sexual misconduct, by teachers in schools is so pervasive that they have a name for the practice of shifting teachers around in schools to avoid dealing with the problem. It's called Passing the Trash.

The Catholic church adopted the same practice, but the media chooses not to acknowledge that the problem could be a generational one.
